A record producer who previously worked with bands such as the Pet Shop Boys has created an album documenting his train journeys through Croydon.

Steve Spiro found that after setting up his own business and starting a family the only time he had to make music was on his daily commute from East Grinstead to Victoria.

The resulting album Frequent Traveller features 12 tracks, one for each stop on the line, and lasts the exact time it takes to make the trip – delays permitting.

Mr Spiro said East Croydon, the longest track on the album, is one of the last industrial pieces before the record becomes more ambient, moving through Sanderstead and Upper Warlingham.

He said elements of the music were inspired by characters he met on the trains, including a compulsive slot machine gambler at East Croydon station and an incredibly tall businessman who splayed across other passengers when he fell asleep.

Samples of the record, which is released on June 6, are available at soundcloud.com/ frequent-traveller.
