A mammoth Tesco superstore is being planned for Purley Way as John Lewis eyes up moving its new At Home store to Croydon town centre.

Images released by Tesco show the building dwarfing nearby superstores Currys and Toys R Us at the site near the junction with Trojan Way, Waddon.

Current occupier John Lewis only opened the doors to its new store last August, but the Tesco tenants are already investigating options for a larger store closer to central Croydon within five to ten years.

The supermarket giant will be holding a public exhibition detailing its proposals at the Beddington Centre, Marlowe Way between 6pm and 8.30pm on May 20, and 10am to 4pm on May 21.

Tesco corporate affairs manager Tony Fletcher said: β€œIn addition to a new Tesco store our plans include major landscape improvements to create an attractive green corridor, extending the Waddon Trail to link up to existing parkland for local people to enjoy.”
