Motorists will be able to pay for parking by text, phone or even an iPhone application in Kingston during a trial of cashless technology.

The new system will come into effect in six controlled parking zones on Friday, May 13, and be extended to Kingston Council’s three town centre car parks on May 23.

The service, provided by RingGo, is already used in some other London boroughs, and will allow people to top up their parking without having to go back to their car.

Motorists will be able to pre-register by visiting myringgo.co.uk/register or when they arrive at the car park by calling 020 3046 0010.

The trial, which could be continued if motorists approve, comes as the council begins an upgrade of its town centre car parks.

The £310,000 investment includes new pay equipment, replacing machines that are more than 10 years old.

Offices in the car parks will be replaced with a link to an operator in the council’s CCTV control room who will validate tickets and monitor the building.
