MBP Architects has received a commendation for its design of the new Waitrose development at this year’s City of Winchester Trust Design Awards.

Held on November 1, at Hampshire County Council’s headquarters, the awards that recognise schemes which display a high standard of design and make a lasting contribution to the City of Winchester.

The Richmond company’s scheme in Weeke, Winchester, was highly commended by judges, who included the former president of the Royal Town Planning Institute, Martin Willey.

Mr Willey said the scheme was “so much better than most retail developments and a good use of a tight site”.

Matthew Weiner, executive director of Development Securities – developer and owner of the site – said: “To be recognised in this way is a great compliment and testament to our regeneration skills.

“We are very proud of this development, which we believe has brought many benefits to the community in terms of retail services and employment.”

As well as the supermarket, the scheme accommodates a range of services for the community, including a new healthcare practice and residential apartments.

Brendan Tracey, director at MBP, said: “This is a very important project for the practice, and we are extremely fortunate to have worked with such a highly aspirational client.

“The positive contributions made by the tenants ensured this was a scheme the whole team could be proud of.”
