It was wonderful to see the river alive with activity this weekend as crowds watched Kingston Regatta competitors take to the water.
We know that staying active and healthy has positive benefits on our physical and mental health and well-being, both now and in the future.
That’s why we’ve launched the Active Kingston campaign, to inspire people to get involved in the wide range of opportunities available across the borough to get fit, feel good, connect with people, and have fun.
We’re working with partners to create a thriving and active community across the whole borough – together we are on a mission to get Kingston active.

From visiting a local leisure centre or sports club, to getting outside in one of our beautiful parks, or finding an inclusive activity tailored to your needs, embracing a healthy and active lifestyle in a way that suits you is an investment in your future.
The new Active Kingston hub on the council’s website is an excellent way to find out about activities, events, and groups you can get involved in – many are low cost or free.

As we head into the summer holidays, look out for Active Kingston events and activities across the borough, including the Active for All Sports Day on Wednesday 12 August at Chessington Sports Centre.
Last year’s event was held in Surbiton and it was an absolutely fantastic day packed with local clubs and activities for all.
On 19 July, you can head to the river again to see the Dragon Boat racing in Canbury Gardens – a brilliant day out for all the family in a beautiful riverside setting.

There is already plenty of fantastic work going on across our neighbourhoods, with residents of all ages and abilities making their mark in their own way.
Last summer Kingston was crowned ‘Most Improved Borough’ at the London Youth Games, winning five gold medals, seven silvers, and one bronze.
And we’ve seen growing numbers of people join us for Move Well, Live Well events – gentler exercise and movement targeted at older people.
There have also been some exciting developments in the council’s leisure services recently.
A new 10-year agreement with Places Leisure to operate our leisure centres will see the company investing £8.5 million in new leisure services and improved facilities.
Under the new contract, Chessington Sports Centre and Albany Outdoors are now managed by Places Leisure, and will benefit from the new investment.
At Albany Outdoors, investment in the popular outdoor education and water sports centre will help to expand opportunities for training, holiday camps, and community activities.
You can find out what’s on at Albany this summer at placesleisure.org/centres/albany-outdoors.
And of course, we are eagerly anticipating the opening of the brand new Kingston Leisure Centre in spring next year, which will deliver the inclusive, accessible facilities residents told us they wanted, including a 25-metre, eight-lane swimming pool, a teaching and learning pool, a large fitness gym, three multi-purpose studios, a sports hall, squash courts, a health suite, soft play area, and café.
You can take a fly through the building on our LinkedIn page.
