We all know that local businesses are struggling through the Covid crisis but the reality is that foot-fall and hence commerce is (and was) suffering even before the plague struck.

I would like you all to consider (if you have not previously) an attempt to revitalise activity in Walton Road (i.e. our local “High Street”).

We have a wide sidewalk passing by Tesco Metro, various charity shops, other businesses and a couple of restaurants. Obviously they are all suffering to a greater or lesser extent from high rentals and high business rates as are businesses on the other side of the road (not to mention those that are empty or closed down).

Erratically, they may have been given some relief under National or Local Government support or legislation but the pattern of closures and profusion of charity shops, beauty and hair salons does little to promote diverse, local, popular commerce.

I want there to be serious consideration given to creating a weekend street market, hopefully promoting local produce where possible. There is some parking on the main road but there is of course an underused public car park behind the old Fire Station.

So, my proposal is this: 1. Issue low cost (or even free to begin with as a trial) licences to traders to have temporary stalls on the sidewalk outside at least from Tesco Metro and the Post Office down to the Anarkali restaurant 2. Make public parking free in the car park behind the old Fire Station on market days.

There has been a successful street market outside the “Heart” in Walton-on-Thames; so why not one for us in East Molesey?

This would encourage footfall generally and help the struggling or empty businesses on both sides of Walton Road.

Some positive action would reflect well on Elmbridge B.C. and Surrey B.C. and promote their commitment to support and re-energise local businesses.
