A “state-of-the-art” swimming pool complex could be built on a school’s old tennis courts in a new £5 million building project.

A new hub for swimming could be built at Bourne End Academy if new plans revealed by Bourne End Junior Sports Club (BEJSC) and Neil Bailey Swimming club are successful.

The secondary school’s tennis courts – which they say are “surplus to requirements” – would be where the new pool building would go.

Plans for the new swimming pool complex are at an early stage and no official application has yet been submitted to Buckinghamshire Council, but BEJSC say it will feature two pools, one with six lanes and one with three or four lanes.

There will be diving blocks, inclusive changing facilities, separate staff changing rooms, a small seating area and café for parents and coach and car parking.

BEJSC also hope the building itself will be carbon-neutral, with a green roof, and will be accessible for those with disabilities.

Explaining why they need a new centre, BEJSC, who are already based in New Road where Bourne End Academy is, said: “Our multi-sport centre in New Road offers a wide range of facilities to deliver our aims as well as serving many adults in the community. It has become a true community asset.

“However, the one thing that has always been missing is a swimming pool to serve our large number of swimmers.

“Pools have been hired in High Wycombe and Marlow over the years at considerable cost.

“In addition, the Swimming Section is having increasing difficulty in hiring the WDC pools at times convenient for our local children, and our agreed dates sometimes get changed at short notice.

“In addition, we are aware of many local adults that would benefit from a local facility. We are now in a position to consider building our own pool working in partnership with Neil Bailey Swimming.”

They added: “The state-of-the-art facility will be unique to the area, providing a hub for swimming provision to those in Bourne End and local villages, with the aim to ensure all those within a five-mile radius are able to swim and swim well.

“Using the latest technology and a carbon neutral design, the facility will not only be sustainable and eco-friendly, but inclusive; offering accessibility to those with additional needs as well as the wider community.”

They are hoping to raise £5 million through crowdfunding to pay for the pool.

The plans will be discussed on June 23 by councillors on the Wooburn and Bourne End Parish Council’s planning, highways and lighting committee.

There have already been some concerns raised about how accurate the traffic surveys carried out on behalf of BEJSC are.

Bringing it to the committee’s attention, Cllr Miriam Blazey said the surveys are “meaningless”, adding: “They were conducted on Wednesday, December 17, and Sunday, December 20 – just before the Christmas break and going into Tier 4 when there were no students at school and a work from home rule in place so the figures are completely irrelevant and non-representative.

“These should be repeated but of course we are about to go into the summer break in six weeks and two years are missing from the student numbers – crucially including sixth formers with possible access to cars.”
