A woman who drove the wrong way down the M25 while drunk has been jailed.

Hanjarina Oliveira, 39, was sentenced to 12 months in prison after pleading guilty to driving dangerously, driving otherwise in accordance with a license, failing to provide a sample of breath, and two counts of assault of an emergency worker at Guildford Magistrates’ Court earlier this year.

She was arrested on Wednesday, February 10, after she was spotted "driving erratically" the wrong way on the M25.

Footage of the incident, which happened in February, was posted online by Surrey Roads Policing Unit (RPU), who responded and said two of their officers had "put themselves in harms way" to stop the driver.

It showed PC Browne and SC Wright of Surrey RPU locate and then face down the oncoming car driven by Oliveira to ensure she stopped without crashing into other road users.

A Surrey Police spokesperson described the dramatic incident, which also involved Oliveira attempting to bite emergency service responders, in further detail:

"At around 8:50pm, officers responded to reports of a grey Vauxhall Insignia driving against the flow of traffic on the M25 at Leatherhead between Junction 8 and 9.

"Officers from the Roads Policing Unit responded to the reports and were forced to get head on with Oliveira’s vehicle to bring her to a stop.

"Officers immediately removed Oliveira from the vehicle, who was holding an open bottle of wine. Empty beer bottles were also found in the car.

"Oliveira was assessed by paramedics in an ambulance and during this she attempted to bite a police officer and a paramedic."

Police added that she had "never held" a UK driving licence and had previously been convicted of drink driving in 2013.

Oliveira was also disqualified from driving for 3 years and 6 months.

Investigating officer, PC Tim Browne said: "Driving while under the influence of alcohol is completely unacceptable and Oliveira’s reckless actions could very easily have had catastrophic consequences.

"Our officers put themselves in harm’s way to stop the vehicle and thankfully we were able to prevent anyone being injured."
