A young man was taken to hospital with a knife wound after a fight involving "groups armed with weapons" broke out on a residential road in New Cross this afternoon.

The fight took place on Amersham Road in New Cross around 3.30pm, officers with the Met Police in Lewisham said.

Images taken at the scene showed a heavy emergency services presence on the road with people looking on from behind police cordons.

The Met imposed a Section 60 dispersal order across much of Lewisham in the aftermath of the violence, and several roads in the New Cross area remained closed as officers investigated what happened.

Responding to a request from News Shopper, a spokesperson for the Met Police said:

"Police were called at shortly after 15:30hrs on Wednesday, 12 May, to reports of a group of males fighting with weapons in Amersham Road, SE14.

"Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service.

"A man, believed to be in his late teens, was found with a knife injury to his wrist and was taken to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

"A number of roads are closed as police carry out their enquiries.

"At this early stage, there have been no arrests."

London Ambulance Service was contacted for comment.
