Labour have won the Lambeth and Southwark seat at the London Assembly elections, with their candidate claiming almost half of all votes cast.

Labour candidate Marina Masuma Ahmad won 91,949 votes, almost three times more votes than Conservative Party candidate Hannah Ginnet, who finished third overall with 30,855 votes.

The Conservatives were beaten to second place in Lambeth and Southwark by the Green Party candidate Claire Sheppard, whose tally of 36,933 votes reflected a seemingly impressive night for the party in a number of areas across the capital.

Liberal Democrat Florence Cyrot came in fourth with 20,920.

In a short statement posted to Twitter Ahmad thanked voters in Lambeth and Southwark for electing her to the London Assembly.

"Thank you to everyone who has made this possible - I am absolutely delighted and honoured to have been elected Assembly Member for Lambeth and Southwark Rose," she said.

Ahmad, a former Crystal Palace councillor and committed trade unionist, campaigned on addressing child poverty and the housing crisis in Lambeth and Southwark, and pledged to "rebuild the day and night time economy, local businesses and encourage investment to create jobs."

Like the London Mayoral election, the count for the London Assembly is continuing today (Saturday, May 8) with full results expected Saturday evening at the earliest.

With seven seats declared for the assembly so far, Labour have won four (Lambeth and Southwark, Brent and Harrow, Ealing and Hillingdon, and North East), and the Conservatives three (Bexley and Bromley, Havering and Redbridge and West Central).
