A further increase in deaths involving Covid-19 has been recorded in Cornwall's hospitals on a day when the overall number of cases in the area goes past the 10,000 milestone.

Five new deaths have been reported at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust. Two of these took place on Wednesday (January 13), bringing the total on that day to three, with another three on Thursday (January 14).

Two further deaths have also been registered at the Cornwall Partnerships NHS Trust, the most recent taking place on Thursday (January 14) and the other on a date not specified.

There have now been 18 deaths reported in Cornwall's hospitals since Wednesday this week. .

It brings the number of deaths at the Trust to 105, with a further 31 taking place at at the Cornwall Partnerships NHS Trust, meaning altogether there have been 136 related death's in Cornwall's hospitals since the start of the pandemic.

The overall total number of deaths in Cornwall – including deaths in care homes and other settings – now sits at 225 deaths recorded in the 28 days after a positive test result. The total number of deaths with Covid-19 simply on the death certificate remains at 251 on the government dashboard, as this is updated weekly.

In the UK overall another 1,295 people have died within 28 days of their first positive test result. This brings the total number of UK deaths within 28 days to 88,590, and 89,243 for all deaths with Covid-19 on the certificate, which is updated weekly. These figures include people in care home and other settings.

The latest Covid-19 case information for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has also now been published - and it sees the number cases in the area rise past the 10,000 milestone.

As of 4pm today (Saturday, January 16) there have been 214 new cases in the region recorded in the previous 24 hours.

The total number of cases in the local authority area since the start of the pandemic now sits at 10,175.

There were 1,790 cases recorded in the seven days leading up to January 10. Data from the most recent five days is not shown due to being incomplete.

This represents a weekly rate of 313.0 cases per 100,000 people.

The number of people testing positive for coronavirus in the UK increased by 41,346, to 3,357,361 since the start of the pandemic.
