Two members of staff at Helston Community College are isolating at home after a confirmed case of coronavirus at the school.

Cornwall Council has confirmed that one member of staff has tested positive for the virus and is now isolating, along with a second member of staff who was a close contact.

However, in a letter to parents the school said that due to the reduced number of students now on site – following its closure to all but vulnerable pupils and children of key workers, as per government instructions – no students have been in direct contact with the confirmed case.

A council spokesperson said: "The Department for Education and Cornwall Council are working together to support staff, parents and the children at Helston Community College, following a confirmed case of Covid-19 at the setting.

"One member of staff, plus one member of staff who was a contact, are isolating at home, in line with government guidance.

"Cornwall Council’s public health team will continue to work closely with the school to ensure appropriate action is taken."

The school remains open for vulnerable children and the children of key workers, who should attend as normal if they are well, added the council.

"We would like to remind everyone to help us limit the spread of the virus by adhering to Public Health advice," said the spokesperson.

Wednesday's coronavirus cluster map update showed that Helston had 34 confirmed cases in the seven days leading up to January 1 – up from nine only a week earlier.
