A spike in coronavirus cases in Mole Valley has brought alarm and concern among authorities and residents in the district.

Official data released by Surrey County Council (SCC) showed Mole Valley's seven-day rate for the virus was higher than almost every other district in the county up in the week up to November 10.

In the last seven days, the district that encompasses Leatherhead reported 175 new cases, giving it a case-rate figure of 200.6 per 100,000 people in the area.

In all Surrey, only Spelthorne reported higher figures with 216 new cases up to November 10 and a rate of 216.3 per 100,000 people.

Last week, up to November 4, Mole Valley's figures were even higher, reporting 228 new cases and prompting a statement from Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) Council Leader Stephen Cooksey:

“Over the last few weeks, we have seen a rapid rise in levels of Coronavirus across Mole Valley. Our number of cases are currently higher than any other Surrey area.

"We are naturally very concerned about this and are asking everyone to be extra vigilant in playing their part by following the national restrictions.

"This will help keep people of all ages in Mole Valley safe, save lives, protect the NHS and help ensure that when we emerge from this national lockdown we do so with the lowest level of restrictions," he said.

"Nationally, hospital admissions are rising as a result of this deadly disease. We need everyone in the district to follow the government’s advice.

"The advice is to stay home and only leave for specific purposes and to avoid meeting people you do not live with unless this is allowed within the guidance," Cllr Cooksey added.

MVDC reiterated public health guidelines about keeping oneself safe from the virus, urging people to wash their hands with soap regularly and for at least 20 seconds, wear face covering while in public and physical distancing oneself from others.

Other areas of Surrey reported differing rates of Covid-19.

Epsom and Ewell for example previously experienced a spike in case numbers, but new cases have started to come down a little.

The borough reported 95 new cases up to November 10 and a case rate of 117.8 per 100,000 people.

Reigate and Banstead on the other hand saw a surge in cases like Mole Valley, with 175 new cases and a rate of 117.6.
