Nearly a dozen arts venues in south east London are among over 500 in the UK to receive up to £1 million each as a share of the Government's second round of its Cultural Recovery Fund.

One lucky local organisation has been awarded close to the maximum £1 million, whilst ten overs have received a vital 'lifeline' to help them survive the pandemic.

Organisations include the Eltham Little Theatre, Bexley Council, Bromley Youth Music Trust and Greenwich Dance Agency, all receiving between £50,000 and £250,000.

The tranche of cash is round two of the Government's £1.6 billion Culture Recovery Fund, and will "protect these special places" which "form the soul of our nation", said Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden.

The money will help performances to restart, assist venues to plan for reopening, protect jobs and create freelance opportunities, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said.

Last week, round one saw 31 local companies receive funding, including Greenwich Theatre, Greenwich+Docklands Festival, HQ Theatre in Bromley and the Albany in Lewisham.

This week, the Woolwich Creative District Trust, the organisers behind the exciting new cultural project 'Woolwich Works', saw the biggest funding boost, however, with an extra £984,000.

In total, 588 more arts organisations were awarded funding totalling £76 million in the latest Cultural Recovery Fund grants, including London's Somerset House, Cornwall's Kneehigh Theatre and the Gothic Festival in Whitby.

Comedy clubs, circuses, festivals, local museums, theatres and more were among those to be chosen, and the West End's longest play, The Mousetrap, will also receive funding.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: "This is more vital funding to protect cultural gems across the country, save jobs and prepare the arts to bounce back.

"Through Arts Council England we are delivering the biggest ever investment in the arts in record time. Hundreds of millions of pounds are already making their way to thousands of organisations.

These awards build on our commitment to be here for culture in every part of the country."
