A PROLIFIC shoplifter who found himself in the dock for the fifth time this month may be intentionally trying to get arrested, his solicitor has suggested.

Alan Dawson, 35, admitted seven charges of shoplifting when he appeared before South Cumbria Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Magistrates heard Dawson had walked into Barrow's Asda supermarket a number of times and consumed food in the store without paying.

He also stole from Dutton's Convenience Store in Barrow's Schneider Road a number of times.

The seven offences were committed between August 6 and September 2.

Describing the most recent offence, prosecutor Pam Ward told the court: "At 7.50am he was in Asda in Walney Road, he went into the restaurant area and picked up and sandwich without paying for it.

"He then walked around the store with the empty sandwich box and picked up a bottle of orange WKD alcopop.

"Staff detained him and police arrived afterwards."

The Low White Close resident also stole alcohol from the Dutton's corner shop.

In total he took items worth £11.70 from Asda and £5.49 from Dutton's.

Representing him, Michael Graham: "He has significant issues.

"There is a theory to suggest it's done in order for him to effect his arrest."

Magistrates sentenced Dawson to a community order with 20 rehabilitation days, a fine of £50 and order compensation to be paid to the businesses.

He was last in court on September 16.
