THERE has been major disruption to rail services this morning after a person was hit by a train.
The incident happened at about 9am between East Croydon and Purley with all lines blocked between the two stations.
Services running through the East Croydon area were suspended and Southern Rail has warned that “this will cause significant disruption across the Southern and Thameslink network” including journeys to and from Brighton.
Emergency services are on site dealing with this tragic incident.

A spokesman for the rail company said: “It is with great sadness that we report a person has been hit by a train between East Croydon and Purley.
“All lines are blocked between these stations while the emergency services work to deal with this incident.
“Trains between East Croydon and Purley/Oxted may be cancelled or delayed.
"In addition, as a result of the congestion caused by this incident, London Overground services will be suspended between Sydenham and West Croydon.”
He added: “We strongly advise to delay travelling until later today.”

Network Rail Kent and Sussex provided further information on the incident.
A spokesman said: "We're sorry to say a person has been hit by a train between Croydon and Purley and we've had to close all lines through the area.
"This means no trains can run to and from London from Gatwick and Sussex, and we advise passengers to delay their journeys."
At 10.55am he provided an update.
The spokesman said: "All lines have now reopened however services running through the area are still subject to delays and late notice alterations. Please check before you travel."
