A nursing home in Sutton organised a party to mark the life of their 'wonderful' resident, Betty Spear, as she turned 107.

St Judes Nursing Home celebrated Betty Spear's 107th birthday with a full-day of partying on August 4.

The care home kickstarted celebrations with a pamper session and worked together to decorate the home in her honour.

The day followed with singing, laughter and a room full of Betty's favourite treats before a tea party commenced in the evening.

"Especially when walking into the room, everybody greeted me and was singing.

"I had my hair and nails done and received a card from the Queen.

"I also enjoyed seeing Ken (son in law ) and my lovely party with my friends.

"I want to thank the girls and staff from the bottom of my heart."

Betty went onto revealing her secret to staying happy and healthy, she said: "Be nice to people, try to make them laugh and a little drop of whiskey every day."

She hopes the younger generation will "be happy and kind, be tolerant of old people and try to help them."

Living through two world wars, care home staff said its the least they could have done to mark her milestone.

Matron at St Judes Nursing Home, Patricia Fyfe said: "We are honoured to be celebrating Mrs Betty Spear's 107th birthday.

"Her joyful laugh and infectious smile has been a blessing in our home since she arrived in 2018.

Your Local Guardian:

"Whilst every birthday is a cause for celebration, marking 107 years during unprecedented times needs something extra special.

"Betty has lived through a lot including two World Wars, The Great Depression and has even witnessed women getting the right to vote.

"We were determined not to let coronavirus stand in the way of her celebrations.

"Working around the infection control measures and still ensuring the residents feel loved and supported, especially during momentous occasions such as birthdays, is of paramount importance.

"Seeing Betty smiling during the whole day was beautiful and we can't wait to mark her 108th birthday next year."
