Dramatic scenes forced the Dartford Crossing to close yesterday evening after a van burst into flames on the bridge.

Images on social media show smoke billowing from a vehicle on the bridge, and firefighting crews were sent to the clokwise carriageway of the M25 at 8:15pm, June 26.

The QE2 Bridge was closed, causing traffic to build up, and Highways England warned that the lane closures would cause travel disruption until around 10:30pm.

All lanes except the inside lane had reopened by 9:45pm, allowing traffic to flow somewhat more smoothly as people headed for the coast to make the most of the good weather.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said they assisted their Essex Fire and Rescue Service colleagues at the scene of the vehicle fire on the bridge of the Dartford crossing.

"Three fire engines from Kent attended and crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet.

"There were no reported injuries."
