The family of Phillip Bagwell have paid moving tributes to him amid a murder investigation into his death in Leatherhead earlier this month.

In statements published by Surrey Police, who are investigating his death, Phillip's family described him as a "proud father" and friend to many in the Leatherhead community.

"Phillip grew up in the local area and was a friend to many people in and around Leatherhead – but to those of us who knew him for many years he was a good friend, always willing to listen and he had a true caring side," the statement read.

"Phillip was a good dad and very proud of his two children who both loved him and will miss him.His family have many happy memories and loved him more than he will ever know," it continued.

As the Comet reported previously, Phillip was found dead at a property on North Street in Leatherhead early on Wednesday, June 10.

A post-mortem investigation found that he died after serious injuries to his head and abdomen.

"His friends and family will never forget Phillip and he will forever live in our hearts," the statement from Phillip's family read.

"This tragedy has robbed all of us of time with Phillip and our lives will be poorer for that."

32-year-old Daniel George Hopper (known locally as Daniel Styles) of Leatherhead has been charged with murder in relation to Phillip’s death.

Police are still appealing for witnesses in the murder inquiry, as they detailed in a statement earlier this week:

"Officers are keen to speak to anyone who was in that area at that time as they may provide information relevant to the enquiry.

"In particular there is a white van shown on CCTV driving along Station Road at around 3am, which officers are keen to trace."

Anyone who was in the North Street and Station Road area between 2am and 4am on Wednesday 10 June, and has not already spoken to officers, is asked to call Surrey Police on 101, quoting ref PR/45200059647.
