Work will resume on a skate park planned for Leatherhead Leisure Centre after it was suspended due to the coronavirus crisis, Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) have announced.

The design of the new skate park, which will replace an "outdated" park at the same location, was "overwhelmingly voted for" by skate park users and local residents during a public consultation with specialist company Fearless Ramps’ who came up with the plans.

MVDC said Tuesday (May 26), that the existing half pipe and other park features will be removed entirely for the new park over the next two weeks.

"All existing ramps at the leisure centre’s site, including the half pipe, will be removed and replaced with new heavy duty steel frame equipment and will use the popular Skatelite pro as the riding surface.

"Work to remove the old ramps is planned to take place over two weeks, commencing May 25.

"Having taken out the existing equipment, installing the new ramps’ framework will take between three and four weeks," a council statement read.

The 'Skatelite pro' material referenced by the council is a highly popular riding surface in the extreme sports world made from solid paper composite material.

"Whether you are a skater or take pleasure in riding a BMX or scooter, we hope that providing modern skate park facilities will be welcomed by the local community," Councillor David Draper, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said.

"It is absolutely right that this project was on hold for the past couple of months for the safety of everyone involved.

"As we move into the first recovery phase, it is important that projects such as these can be progressed as we look forward to returning to normal; albeit possibly a new normal," he added.
