Cardwell Primary School has been named on the prestigious shortlist for the National Teaching Awards, with headteacher Lisa Lazell nominated to win one of the highly desirable 'teaching Oscars' on offer.

Selected from thousands of nominations, Ms Lazell is now in the running to win Headteacher of the Year for her work at the Woolwich Primary School.

Described as an 'inspirational leader', the school proudly said she had managed to create a "high-quality learning environment in which staff and pupils feel inspired and supported to reach their full potential."

Around 72% of pupils at Cardwell Primary School have English as a second language so face additional barriers to learning.

But Ms Lazell and her team have been credited with providing a range of different opportunities to learn in different environments, and ensure all pupils have the opportunity to go on a number of trips and specialist visits directly linked to curriculum topics.

She will now face off against 87 other extraordinary teachers for one of just 14 Gold Awards, dubbed Educations's Oscars.

The winners will be announced at a televised UK awards ceremony later this year, broadcast on the BBC as 'Britain's Classroom Heroes'. The Pearson National Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers, running since 1998.

The shortlist has been released at a time when schools are doing more than ever to support their communities. If you'd like to thank an amazing teacher, you can send them a card for free via the Thank a Teacher campaign.

Rod Bristow, President of Pearson UK, said: “Congratulations to every one of our teachers, lecturers and school staff who have been shortlisted for a Silver Award. At a time of unprecedented challenge, schools across the country are stepping up and playing a vital role for the wellbeing of our pupils and their families, and it is only right that we take this opportunity to say thank you.

At Pearson we are delighted to support these Awards every year and to recognise and celebrate teachers for their commitment, dedication and passion.
