Charlton Athletic Women have revealed that former player Lucy Kerr has tragically passed away after losing her battle with bone cancer aged just 20.

Kerr joined Charlton at under-14 level before making the step up into senior football with the club's development team, as well as captaining the Kent Schools FA team.

Riteesh Mishra, manager of the women's Championship Club, said: "The news is tragic. My heart goes out to Lucy's family and friends.

“She will be in our thoughts and forever be part of our Charlton family."

The club put out a statement stating that "everyone at Charlton Athletic Women is saddened to hear the news that former player Lucy Kerr has passed away.

"The thoughts of everyone at Charlton Athletic Women are with the family at this difficult time and the club will pay tribute to Lucy in an upcoming fixture."

Mishra said Kerr was there at the start of his journey at Charlton as a coach with the under-16s, adding that "her personality and attitude in particular were infectious and she always put a smile on the faces of staff."

Kent FA also tweeted out their "deepest sympathies" to the family following Lucy's passing.

Former club Sheppey Angels FC also posted an emotional statement paying tribute to the "amazing and talented young lady who would light up the pitch like never seen before."

The statement read: "As a club we never thought that we’d be writing this post about one of our much loved players.

"As most of you are aware our player Lucy Kerr has been battling cancer over the past months, she’d gone through so much and has been so incredibly brave and strong as her team mates we couldn’t of been anymore proud of her.

"Unfortunately today Lucy lost her fight to cancer and we are devastated 😭💔.

"Lucy you will never be forgotten and you’ll always be a Sheppey Angel."

A fundraising page was set up a few months ago in order to raise money for Lucy and her family, as well as raise awareness for bone cancer.
