A student from Esher College won a Bronze medal at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics in Lausanne last week (January 22).
Olivia Weedon won Bronze with her three teammates in the Mixed Team, Short Track Speed Skating Relay event at the games.
Olivia, who lives in Whitton and is a former St Catherine’s Twickenham Pupil, is currently studying for her A levels at Esher College.
Her grandmother Susan Williams watched Olivia and her relay team clinch the Olympic podium place.
She described what it meant to the family in conversation with the Comet.
"It was absolutely amazing," Susan said.
"She worked so hard and we're all so pleased for her.
"It's like a dream come true for her," she added.
Olivia trains in Guildford with the Aldwych Speed Club, who are based at Guildford Spectrum.
The Olympic medal itself came about after Olivia placed among the best of 32 female competitors in the short track speed skating events.
After that, the top 16 boys and girls were entered into mixed relays of blended sex and nationalities, something Susan was full of praise for.
"The International Olympic Committee (IOC) are very keen to promote the spirit of Olympianism — friendship around the world and international co-operation. That's what the Olympics are all about," she said.
"She was with boys from New Zealand and Italian and a Korean girl," Susan pointed out.
"We're incredibly proud of Olivia and to have been there was just fantastic."
