Plans to relocate Elmbridge Museum are facing a possible £125,000 shortfall which could put the whole project in jeopardy.
The budget set for the move from Weybridge to the site at the old Walton library does not cover a new permanent exhibition space, which would cost about £125,000.
This is because the application for a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) was kept below £1million in order to avoid Elmbridge Borough Council being required to contribute 25 per cent of the total costs.
But the provision of a new exhibition space is key to the success of the HLF bid.
Marilyn Scott, director at the Lightbox in Woking and HLF board member, reported to the council she was "certain that the bid would not be successful if this part of the project was not carried out".
Officers are currently exploring options available for external funding for the new exhibition space, but if unsuccessful the council will put in a capital bid in the 2008/09 capital programme.
