He broke the European record and set a new personal best but Croydon-born Thomas Young was left disappointed with just silver after missing out in a photo finish at the World Para Athletics Championships.

The precocious 19-year-old stopped the clock in exactly 11 seconds in Dubai, losing out to China’s Dening Zhu who crossed the line at the same time but was awarded the gold after technology came into play.

It was a heart-breaking ending for the man who scooped double gold at the European Championships in the 100m and 200m last year, nevertheless breaking the European record he set in the heats once again in the final.

And while acknowledging the magnitude of his achievement, Young couldn’t help feel disappointed at just failing to clinch the ultimate crown.

“I came off the track thinking 'could I have it’, but I had a feeling it was Dening [Zhu] and it was him,” he said.

“I gave it all on the track as I said and I’m definitely happy – I’ve taken it all in and I’ve learnt a lot.

“It’s a European record again and a personal best again and you can’t do much more than that really other than win gold – I’m slightly disappointed but I know that I have lots to work on as we head towards Tokyo.

“I started really well. I came up and saw I was in a good position, so I tried to run my race until the end really hard.

“Dening is a great champion and he’s a nice guy as well – I gave it all on the track, me and my coach Joe [McDonnell] have worked really well this year, my parents have been really supportive and I can go home on a high.

“I’ve enjoyed myself as well – I can now have a few days of recovery and then hopefully come back stronger for the 200m.”
