The Croydon Central constituency is one of three in the borough and, as the name suggests covers the town centre up to some parts of South Norwood.

In 2015 Labour’s Sarah Jones won the seat from the previous Conservative MP Gavin Barwell with 29,873 votes to 24,221.

Overall Croydon voted against Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum.

But in the Croydon Central constituency, 50.31 per cent voted in favour of leaving the European Union.

Below is a list of candidates standing in the election which will be updated as more come forward.

Sarah Jones – Labour

Your Local Guardian:

In her two years as an MP, Sarah was appointed Labour’s shadow housing minister.

She has lived in Croydon her whole life and her children go to school here.

Sarah started her political career working for Labour MP and Northern Ireland Secretary, Mo Mowlam.

Her key priorities are stopping police cuts to “stamp out knife crime”, more affordable homes for local people, action on the climate emergency and ending school cuts.

On Brexit she wants to see the final Brexit deal put back to the people for another vote.

Mario Creatura – Conservative

Your Local Guardian:

Mario has also lived in Croydon for his whole life, growing up in Addiscombe

He was born in Mayday Hospital, grew up in Addiscombe and his first flat was in the town centre just off Surrey Street.

Now he and his wife Amy live in Park Hill. He has previously worked for beer brand Heineken and now works for Virgin Money UK.

He said: “My belief in Croydon runs deep. It’s where I am from, that’s why I am working to be our next MP: to unlock Croydon’s potential by working with our passionate local community.”

Simon Sprague – Liberal Democrat

Your Local Guardian:

He grew up in West Wickham but has lived in Wellesley Road. He works in pharma manufacturing and is a keen walker and cook.

Simon said: “For too long, the people of Croydon have been stuck with the same two parties offering the same old solutions both locally and nationally.

“It is abundantly clear to me that both parties are offering more Brexit chaos, more inaction on the climate emergency and more misguided policies, poorly executed, to ensure our streets stay safe and that everyone in Croydon can find an affordable place to live.”

Esther Sutton – Green Party

Your Local Guardian:

As the landlady of The Oval Tavern, Esther will be a familiar face for some. She is born and bred in Croydon, she has also raised two children here.

Esther is chair of Croydon Pubwatch, director of Made In Croydon and a founder member of Croydon Pride.

Knife crime, the Westfield development and affordable housing are all important issues to her as well as, of course, the environment.
