The government's Flood Information Service issued a warning for areas of Kingston, Ewell and Thames Ditton on Tuesday (September 24).
After heavy rains fell across much of Southern England early on Tuesday, the government agency released a statement warning of potential flooding from the River Hogsmill in the area.
"River levels are rising as a result of heavy rainfall this morning.
"Consequently, flooding could occur between 9am and 3pm, but due to the unpredictable nature of thunderstorms flooding is expected to be limited to the areas where the heaviest rain is experienced," a spokesperson for the government agency said.
"We believe there is a possibility of flooding for low lying land, gardens and roads close to the river in this area.
"Surface water flooding could also be possible during this time, particularly in the locations of the heaviest rain," they added.
In addition, more showers were expected Tuesday evening, meaning that the Yellow Weather warning for most of England issued by the Met Office would remain in place, and vigilance against flooding for residents was paramount.
"Further showers are expected this afternoon and this evening, and could cause river levels to be higher than normal throughout this time," the Flood Information Service said.
Above all, they urged residents to "avoid contact with flood water" wherever possible to maximise safety in areas that might become flooded.
