Part of Sutton High Street has been cordoned off after a daring daylight raid on a jewellers.
According to police, officers were called to reports of an armed robbery on Lewins Jewellers at around 5pm today.
An eye-witness, who did not want to be named, said four black youths smashed the store's front window using a hammer.
The terrified woman who watched the frenzied two-minute robbery said: "Four kids appeared from nowhere with hammers and smashed the windows of the jewellers in no time. They grabbed valuables as people stared in disbelief. They just didn't care."
A member of the store's staff said they did not wish to comment on the incident at this stage.
A spokesman for the Met Police said officers were still investigating the incident.
Police are understood to be collecting witness statements from neighbouring shops.
