Lee Bowyer admitted he “didn’t fancy” Lyle Taylor to score the penalty which rescued Charlton a point in their draw with Barnsley at Oakwell.

The striker leisurely walked up to the spot before he sent home stopper Samuel Radlinger the wrong way to score the Addicks’ second equaliser in a game the visitors looked on the cusp of losing.

Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher cancelled out a Cauley Woodrow wonder strike before Conor Chaplin replenished the Tykes’ lead four minutes after the break.

It was after Gallagher was fouled inside the box by Bambo Diaby that Taylor, who was Charlton’s leading scorer last term, stepped up to convert. That's now three in three for him to start the campaign.

Bowyer said: “To be fair, I didn't fancy Lyle to score! When he's walking up to take the penalty I didn't fancy him to score, but obviously he does.

“He's so calm in that situation and he's the person you'd want to be taking the penalty so, thankfully, it went in.”

It’s a point which maintains Charlton’s unbeaten start to life in the Championship, having defeated Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City in their opening two matches.

The Addicks boss also admitted he was disappointed with the point, with his side having some good chances to score early on despite Barnsley’s resurgence in the second 45 minutes.

He also lavished praise on Jonny Williams, who helped to set up the equaliser, as the Wales international completed his first 90-minute match since arriving at The Valley on a permanent deal.

Bowyer added: “I just said to the players in there, ‘I’m disappointed with the point’. I think [in the] first-half we had two really good chances to take the lead and then they scored a great goal, a great strike. You can’t defend that.

“The second-half, I thought, we were probably the better side. They were hitting us on the break every now and again, but we had chances. Chuks [Aneke] went through, one-versus-one with the keeper, the keeper makes a good save, and then he went through again and the linesman gave a foul that wasn’t a foul.

“There was no contact, he just fell over.

“I think, overall, the neutral would probably say a draw was fair but I’m a bit disappointed. But it’s a good point.”

Williams, who retained his place in the starting 11 from the 3-1 win against Stoke, was instrumental in the draw at Oakwell.

The former Crystal Palace midfielder whipped in a cross that Gallagher would eventually finish off after it was deflected away from goal. After that, he remained a constant thorn in the opposition’s defence with his movement and creative threat around the box.

Bowyer said: “In the second-half, Jonny looked so much different to me fitness-wise. He’s just lasted 90 minutes. He looked so good.

“I’m happy. I think Chuks came off the bench and gave us something different and Macauley [Bonne] added a threat as well.

“In the end, we had to go for it. We had three big men up top and it paid off for us.”
