Children from East Sheen Primary School broke barriers by winning gold in the capital's biggest athletic sporting event for under 18’s.

Representing the Richmond borough, the children travelled to the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on July 4 to compete in the London Youth Games 2019.

The pupils successfully won first prizes in standing long-jump, vortex throw, 600m and 75m races.

Elizabeth Page, Head Teacher at East Sheen Primary School said: “We congratulate our amazing students for their fantastic achievement.

"Our school is at the heart of the community and we were very proud to represent Richmond as Borough Sports Champions."

Around 7,400 children from across London’s 33 boroughs competed in a variety of sports games in the hopes that they could take home a medal for their council district.

The event - which reaches around 140,000 young people every year, has at least 30 sports for children to compete in.

Each borough spent the year training its ten to eighteen-year olds in preparation for the big day which hosted a range of competitions which included archery, swimming, football, netball, basketball, diving, indoor rowing and skateboarding.

Nicky Affleck, interim CEO of the London Youth Games said: “This finale weekend is the culmination of a year-long programme of participation spanning 47 event days, 30 sports and the 33 London boroughs.

“We’ve celebrated the young people of London in the most magnificent and special way with our new partner Nike, and we couldn’t be prouder.

“The 2019 London Youth Games Finale weekend were the biggest and best yet and we can’t wait to see more young Londoners joining in next year.”
