A Kingston care home opened a new high-tech sensory room for residents living with dementia.

Coombe Hill Manor in Kingston said that the immersive new sensory room will be paired with the installation of a cutting-edge 'Magic Table' as part of the home's newly refurbished Auguste Dementia suite.

The Mayor of Kingston Councillor Margaret Thompson was present to visit the care home (pictured) and was shown the new technology in action.

The Magic Table is an award-winning innovation from the Netherlands, renowned for its innovative approach to dementia care.

The technology contains a series of games for people living with mid-to-late stage dementia.

The games are formulated with the intention to trigger a sense of reminiscence among players in order to encourage stimulation through a series of interactive displays.

The sensory room meanwhile uses a state-of-the-art art projector for creating tranquil scenes, images or connect with family members via Skype.

A Bluetooth enabled screen also allowing families of loved ones to display photos and videos to help recreate past memories.

The room was designed by Dr Anke Jakob, design researcher and lecturer at Kingston University, and leading expert in designing sensory environments for dementia.

Deborah Harding, one of team at the care home, said the new installations would be a boon for residents and their relatives alike and followed a lengthy process of research.

"At Coombe Hill manor, we believe in creating profound experiences to help induce positive outcomes for our residents.

"We spent a lot of time researching and developing the sensory room with Dr Anke Jakob as well as our residents’ family members to ensure the room would deliver the right outcomes for our residents.

"We’re excited to be finally using the sensory room with The Magic Table and can’t wait to see the impact both have on our residents’ wellbeing," Ms Harding said.

John Ramsay, the CEO of Shift8 – the company behind introducing The Magic Table to the UK said:

"By integrating the latest technology, Coombe Hill Manor has the latest facilities to help their residents feel at ease and comfortable in their surroundings.

"The Magic Table compliments the care home’s sensory room, helping to provide a safe and meaningful experience all."
