A Bermondsey woman has celebrated her 100th birthday at a care home in Sunbury.

Margaret Izzillo, who is a resident at Ashton Lodge Nursing Home, celebrated her big day with her daughter Yvonne.

She was born in Bermondsey where she lived with her brother and two sisters, all of whom used to play in the area around Tower Bridge growing up.

Sam Phillips, activities coordinator at Ashton Lodge, said: “Margaret is normally up around 8am and spends her day in the lounge chatting singing, dancing and joining in gentle activities throughout the day.

“Whilst in the lounge Margaret likes to talk about her husband Frank and the things she did as a young woman to staff and residents which always brings a smile to her and all our faces.

“All staff at Ashton Lodge feel really privileged to be able to look after Margaret.”

Margaret had many jobs eventually in later life working for House of Fraser in Richmond.

She was married to her husband, Frank, for 59 years before he passed away in 2000.

She came to live in Ashton Lodge Nursing home in January 2014.
