The Mayor of Epsom and Ewell will continue to support girl guides, Epsom and Ewell Talking Newspaper, and a work-related stress charity as the three causes he aims to fundraise for this year.

Cllr Neil Dallen said that his fundraising efforts would focus on helping three charitable groups: Girl Guiding UK (Epsom Division), Work Stress Solutions, and Epsom and Ewell Talking Newspapers, a charity which provides crucial outreach for blind and partially sighted people in the borough.

“My theme is hope and I aim to give hope to many youths and disadvantaged individuals and organisations in the borough," he said.

"I hope you will be able to come along and join me at my various fundraising events to help raise much needed funds for my chosen charities."

The mayor said his fundraising powers will help give a vital boost to all three groups, with guarantees that all the proceeds raised in conjunction with any fundraising efforts be kept in the borough. Any money raised for Girl Guides UK, for example, will go directly to the Epsom division.

Cllr Dallen said he had initially been inspired to support girl guiding partly in conjunction with the 100-year anniversary of women getting the vote.

He also praised the support and training offered to disadvantaged people by Work Stress Solutions, which he described as "a small group of volunteers who work extremely hard and have a great success rate".

The Epsom and Ewell Talking Newspaper is based at Swail House, a residential building in the centre of Town Ward, Epsom. Over 100 blind and partially-sighted residents live in the area, including those staying at Swail House, who can get weekly access to talking newspaper audio news reports thanks to the service provided by the charity.

The communities under the mayor's jurisdiction can expect a busy calender in the coming months. A series of events aimed at raising money for the above causes was announced by the mayor's office and will look to harness the capabilities of local businesses to help rally support in the borough.

Among the planned events are a routinely quiz night in March, a tapas meal in early April and a Cafe Bridge event in Epsom later that month.
