Following a stabbing in Kew on Sunday morning, Zac Goldsmith MP and Councillor JF Burford met with police and residents outside Cafe Torelli.

They spoke to police and the staff there who assisted the victim on Sunday morning.

In the afternoon, during Home Office Questions in the House of Commons, Zac also asked the Police Minister to acknowledge the level of anxiety in London regarding the recent increase in crime, and to reassure residents not only that the issue is a top Government priority, but that he is doing everything he can to work with both the Met and the Mayor of London on a coordinated and full response.

In recent months Zac has raised concerns directly with Ministers about the need for more funding for our police and has met with the Prime Minister in December to specifically discuss the issue of crime and to lobby her for additional resources.

On the December 13, Zac welcomed the Minister for Policing’s subsequent announcement that up to £14 billion will be allocated to the Police in 2019/20 - an increase of up to £970million on last year's funding.

Zac has also hosted a series of public meetings with the local police in Richmond and North Kingston, where the police answered questions directly from residents.

There will be more such meetings in the future, and these will be widely publicised to encourage residents’ attendance.

Zac said; “I’m pleased of course that the victim is likely to make a full recovery. But the stabbing has nevertheless traumatised the neighbourhood.

"It is not the sort of thing people expect in the borough, and adds to existing anxieties about a rise in crime across the city.

"I am grateful to the local police for their response to the crime which has been full and fast.

"Residents will be reassured both that they are on top of the case and making progress, and by an increased police presence in the area. Crime is fast becoming the top concern for many Londoners and the Government, Mayor and Met police need to work urgently together to fund and deliver a programme for getting it under control.”

"Keeping the community safe is a core priority for me, and I will continue to apply as much pressure as I can to ensure the safety of residents.”
