Surrey Police apprehended two men following a dramatic chase across Bookham Common on Monday night.

Police said two men, aged 19 and 22, were arrested for suspected burglary, theft and drug driving following the chase. A third man was detained but released shortly afterwards.

"We were called shortly before 7am on January 20, with the victim, a woman in her 50s from Fetcham, reporting that her house had been broken into and a car had been stolen from her driveway," a spokesman for Surrey Police said.

The car involved during the incident was spotted on the A246 near Bookham Common on Monday evening. After the driver failed to stop at the behest of the police, officers pursued the vehicle for a short time before the two suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot across Bookham common.

The chase then continued across the open public land, with a police helicopter helping the pursuing officers locate and arrest the two suspects.

One of the men was found in the driveway of a large property nearby. The other was spotted by the helicopter hiding from police in a tree stump on Bookham common.

The Surrey Police spokesman added: "As part of our investigation, we are interested in what may have occurred ahead of the burglary. We are particularly interested in footage, including from a dashcam, of two men on bicycles in the Fetcham area between 6am and 7am."
