The car was pictured in a ball of flames as firefighters attempted to get the situation in Hayes under control.
A spokesman for Bromley MPS said: "Yesterday evening on Croydon Road junction with West Common Road a marked police vehicle responding to an emergency call spontaneously caught fire shortly after arriving on scene.
"The fire spread to another vehicle which was also damaged.
"Contrary to reports on social media this fire was not the result of a collision or a pursuit. The cause of the fire isn’t known at this stage.
"Fortunately nobody was injured. The London Fire Brigade attended and extinguished the fire and the road was reopened at shortly after 10pm."
A spokesman from the London Fire Brigade confirmed that they attended the scene and managed to control the blaze shortly after 9pm.
