A derelict cowshed has been transformed into a new boxing gym in Epsom, opening this weekend.

The Barn is an off-shoot of Gauntlett Boxing club, set up by Epsom local and boxing enthusiast, Chris Gauntlett.

With the waiting list for membership to his original gym growing day by day, Mr Gauntlett decided to expand, converting a nearby dilapidated cowshed in Horton Country Park into a high-spec gym.

"It was inevitable that we'd have to grow. We've got 140 members, and 80 on the waiting list," he said.

"This place popped up, it was completely derelict, but we've managed to keep its original character.

"We want to bring more kids through. We've already got 28 in a small gym, its like the biggest youth club in Epsom. But they come here and learn discipline and receive support."

Mr Gauntlett grew up in the area, spending most of his formative years in the ring boxing for Epsom and Ewell amongst others.

He went on to become a coach at Epsom and Ewell but, still wanting to make an individual impact on the sport, opened his own Gauntlett gym in 2016.

Gauntlett have taken many of their junior boxers out to shows around Surrey and have fought on the Queensbury Boxing League covered by Euro sport.

Mr Gauntlett also won 'Surrey Coach of the Year' 2016 as voted for by Epsom & Ewell Council and the general public.

World title winning boxer Charlie Edwards will be opening the club this Sunday, signing gloves and autographs.

The event is open to the public, starting at 12pm. For more information visit: https://www.facebook.com/Gauntlettboxingclub/
