The next phase of a huge plan to redevelop Leatherhead has begun.

As part of the transformation to the Swan Centre, toilets and baby changing rooms have received a facelift, while levels 1-4 of the car park have also been re-done.

And as of yesterday, phase two is underway. This part of the process will focus on levels five and six of the car park and will see new payment machines installed and replacement of the passenger and goods lifts.

Councillor Simon Edge, cabinet member for prosperity, said: "Mole Valley District Council is undertaking these refurbishments as part of our Transform Leatherhead initiatives aimed at rejuvenating, expanding and transforming Leatherhead town centre.

"The first phase of work, completed on time in early November 2018, has been very well received. It included the creation of stylish new toilets and improvements to Levels 1-4 of the car park.

"This second phase is divided into two parts, the car park works which will be completed by the end of February and the lift works which will be completed by the end of June.

"This will be followed by a third phase of works which will take place from June to September 2019 and will include the reconfiguration of the stairwell, new external branded signs and the creation of a brand new retail space within the centre.

"All of this work is intended to act as a catalyst to help revitalise the High Street by making it easier for people to park and shop, or enjoy the restaurants, cafés and activities in Leatherhead."

In addition to pay and display using cash, the new machines employ a check-in, check-out system for credit, debit card and Apple pay users. Users paying by card will no longer have to predict their length of stay, within the 4 hour limit, on arrival.

The car park will remain open and operational during the works.
