An average of 4.3 people have been injured or killed at the Spread Eagle Junction in Epsom each year since 2010, figures show.

The pedestrian crossings at the Spread Eagle Junction, connecting High Street and Ashley Road, are some of the most used in the town centre.

A Freedom of Information request made by Surrey Comet reveals a total of one fatality and 38 slight or serious casualties have been reported since 2010.

A total of 33 road traffic accidents have been reported at the junction of High Street and Ashley Road since 2010.

Councillor Jane Race said: “It’s one of the major crossings in the town centre and I think if you know the area quite well and you are a young person you can navigate it.

“I have lived in Epsom most of my life. I think that at the moment it’s more dangerous than usual because they are doing the improvement works.

“If you don’t know the area and you don’t know the timing of the traffic lights, it can be a bit confusing.

"More recently, I have seen quite a few near misses where people tried to cross.”

A Surrey County Council spokesman said: “Safety on Surrey’s roads is something we take very seriously.

"We’re currently carrying out a major programme of works in Epsom and as part of that this junction is being upgraded to make it easier for pedestrians to cross.”
