If you’re around to help organise an “amazing” Christmas dinner for young people who have left the care system then this may be just for you.

Volunteer Sutton is looking for people to assist in their “Christmas Dinner for Sutton” project, which forms part of an initiative by author and poet Lemn Sissay MBE.

It comes as a fundraising target of £1,500 has been set to help make it all happen.

Organisers hope to fill it with “food, presents, games, fun and laughter” for young people who may go this festive period without a home cooked meal.

The dinner, they say, should host up to 40 people while the money being raised is to cover costs for the meal, transport, and presents for their attendees.

Mr Sissay, who was knighted during the New Year’s Honours in 2010, was born to an Ethiopian woman in Wigan, Greater Manchester.

He would soon live with a foster family before going through several different care homes during his teenage years, saying he was physically, emotionally, and racially abused in that time.

Since then he has spent decades going back over his childhood with the aim of figuring out what happened and used his experience in his later works.
