A football player who posted a video online of police officers being brutally attacked in South Wimbledon has apologised.

Just before 8pm on Saturday, November 17, the two police constables stopped a car in Kingswood Road.

The three occupants then ran off. The officers managed to detain a 20-year-old man before the other two suspects returned and the officers were assaulted.

A video posted on Twitter by Guildford City Football Club captain Nehemiah Adam showed one suspect fly-kick an officer, while the other constable was being wrestled to the ground.

The video amassed thousands of retweets, but drew its own criticism from people, with some saying he should have helped the officers instead of filming it, while others criticised the caption associated with the video, which read "south London at night.. Lol."

Now Mr Adams and his club have responded.

A statement published on Guildford's website read: "As a club we are horrified at the content of the video that was posted on Mr Nehemiah Adams' Twitter account this morning, and we are in no doubt that it should not have been posted on social media.

"Mr Adams has since apologised for this post stating that he 'didn’t record or narrate the video in question' but that the 'caption he posted was in poor taste'.

Wimbledon Times:

Chairman of the Met Police Federation Ken Marsh spoke out after the footage appeared.

"Are we now in a society where, if we think we can't detain somebody, we just let them go? It's just not worth it," he said.

"We're going to come to a point where we're going to start pushing messages out to our colleagues: 'Risk-assess it dynamically and, if you think you can't detain a person, just let them go.'

"We don't come to work to get assaulted, and if we're not going to be backed up in what we're doing then what is the point?"

The first team captain's Twitter account has since been made private, but not before the video amassed more than 3000 retweets.

"Of course Mr Adams posted this tweet in his own capacity and not as a representative of the football club," Guildford's statement continued.

"However, the club does have a code of conduct for all officials and players. Part of this reads 'Never engage in offensive, insulting or abusive language or behaviour, including on social media.'

"We do understand that this questionable behaviour reflects poorly on both Mr Adams and Guildford City Football Club. As a result the club will now deal with the matter internally.

"Meanwhile Guildford City Football Club is fully supportive of the police and all emergency services, and is thankful for the sacrifice that officers make every day in order to safeguard the community."

Martin Payne, of Brighton Road in South Croydon was arrested and subsequently charged with assault causing ABH and assault on an emergency services worker.

He was further charged with driving without insurance and driving other than in accordance with a licence.

The two officers were taken to a west London hospital. A female officer sustained head injuries and a male officer suffered cuts. They have both been discharged.

Detectives from the South West Command Unit are investigating.

Police are still on the hunt for the two other suspects. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at Merton via 101 quoting reference CAD 6952/17Nov.
