A paraplegic dog in West Molesey who was hit by a car in Romania is front and centre in an episode of Ferne and Rory's Vet Tales which airs next week.

Cassie Carney, 40, said she adopted the shih tzu cross called Otto about five years ago after its owner surrendered him after he lost two legs.

Ms Carney said: “We adopted him and brought him to England. I fell in love with him and could not let him go. My daughter was the one who made the decision.”

Ms Carney she was inspired to contact CBeebies by her daughter Lily, who turns 6 next week and is an avid follower of the TV programme.

The episode centres around Otto, a paraplegic dog who lost both his legs in an accident and uses a wheelchair for full mobility but can get around at home on his two legs without the frame.

Ms Carney said the episode is meant to teach families how to care for disabled pets and dispel any misconceptions about the quality of life paraplegic dogs can have after an injury.

The mum said her daughter was delighted to meet Rory Crawford, who presents Ferne and Rory’s Vet Tales.

She said: “She loves him and was over the moon when Rory came over to our house. Rory just walked through the front door, very casually. It was really relaxed and she had the time of her life.”

The episode, called ‘Otto the Dog’, will be available on iPlayer at 4.35pm next Monday (November 19).

Cassie Carney runs ‘Broken Biscuits’, a Surrey charity advocating for disabled animals by providing free equipment and support to families.
