This is the shocking moment fireworks burst in front of a police car after they were allegedly set off by a group of teenagers in Mitcham.
Dashcam footage captured by a motorist shows one having been ignited as youths ran away in Lavender Avenue yesterday evening (October 24).
Seconds later, another one is let off as sparks fly around the vehicle before two police officers get out and search for the culprits.
The witness, named as Dean from Surbiton, described it as “quite shocking”.
He said it was after the police car flashed its blue lights and turned into the road that the fireworks went off.
Although he didn’t see the full incident, he suspects a group of teenagers could’ve been “fighting each other” beforehand.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said officers were called to Lavender Grove at around 7.38pm on October 24.
It was reported that youths were “letting off fireworks in the street”, and it was when they attended that one burst in the vicinity of their car.
He added that there were no injuries or damage sustained, nor were there any arrests.
CLARIFICATION
Although the dashcam footage is dated for January 1, 2017, the recording was made by the witness on October 24.
