South Western Railway passengers already hit by a 5-day guards’ strike have been told “not to travel”, due to a fault with signalling between Woking and Surbiton.

Today is the second day of five days of industrial action by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) over the future of train guards.

To add insult to injury, a major fault with signalling between Woking and Surbiton means fewer trains are able to run on all lines.

All trains running through to Weybridge, Walton-on-Thames, Esher and Surbiton today (October 24) have been cancelled until 4pm.

South Western Railway said Network Rail engineers have been working on site to resolve the issue and expect disruption to continue until 4pm

Passengers were told in a message: “Due to a major fault with Network Rail signalling systems between Woking and Surbiton, trains are unable to run on this line through to London Waterloo.

"We are advising all passengers who travel on the mainline (services from Weymouth, West of England, Portsmouth) and suburban (from Guildford to Waterloo) services that run through these stations, not to travel and to check for updates."

Passengers are being reminded to claim compensation, if their journey has been delayed by 15 minutes reaching their destination. You do it online here
