Drivers were brought to a standstill on the M25 between junctions 8 and 9 near Leatherhead due to a 'car fire' at the weekend.

Live images from traffic cameras at the scene show dark plumes of smokes coming from a vehicle on the motorway on Sunday afternoon.

The images also show all four lanes of anti-clockwise traffic being held.

According to Highways England, Surrey Police officers attended a 'car fire'.

Four fire engines were called at around 4.40pm on Sunday to a report of a car fire between junctions 8 and 9 of the M25.

A Surrey Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Four fire engines were sent to extinguish the fire and we left shortly before 6pm.”

The anti-clockwise lanes remained blocked until fire crews continued to douse the vehicle. 

In a tweet, Highways England wrote: "The anti-clockwise remains blocked whilst @SurreyFRS continue to douse the vehicle.

"In addition @SurreyRoadCops and @HighwaysSEASTassisting with carriageway clean-up. Long delays."

Reports of the incident on this stretch of the M25 first emerged on social at around 5pm. 

One Facebook user wrote: "I had broken down just in front of it. Luckily there was a police car driving behind the car and got the family out of the car just before it burst into flames."

One Twitter user wrote: "There is the hard shoulder and exit lane just ahead but they won't let us use it."

Drivers were advised to approach with caution.
