Lorries carrying out late night deliveries to a depot are causing physical damage to houses along the A245, according to homeowners.

Dr Joanne Horgan said there had also been damage to manhole covers in the last month.

Speaking on behalf of residents living along Byfleet Road, she presented a petition to Surrey County Council and Elmbridge Borough Council Local Committee calling for the speed limit to be reduced to 40 mph or for other traffic calming measures.

Her calls were echoed by members on the committee who said the road was also dangerous for cyclists.

Dr Horgan said: “We have a problem with lorries in the middle of the night travelling at very, very high speed along the road. The main problem is the noise which wakes us up and the physical shaking of the house, which is causing damage.”

She said the police had carried out speed tests, but found it was only a handful of vehicles driving over the speed limit at night compared to the thousands that travelled along the road an a whole day.

Cllr Peter Szanto said he supported the petition adding that the problem could have been resolved years ago when the national speed limit along the road was reduced to 50mph.

He told the committee on Monday, September 24: “Quite a few years ago I asked for the same thing. Unfortunately for some reason they reduced it from the national speed limit to 50 and if they had reduced it to 40 we wouldn’t be sitting here.”

Cllr Tim Oliver said there was always a problem with traffic jams in the area but when traffic was flowing it was also dangerous for cyclists who were then forced to go on the pavement.

His views were echoed by Cllr Ian Donaldson who had been out cycling along Byfleet Road that morning.

He said: “I cycled this road with Elmbridge Cycle Group and it’s very, very dangerous for cyclists, especially after the roundabout. So reducing it to 40mph and looking for a cycle lane would be very useful.”

Nick Healey, Surrey County Council highways manager, said Highways England had agreed to look at improving the A245 Byfleet Road as part of their wider Wisley Interchange project for Junction 10 of the M3.

He warned that the solution may not be to reduce the speed limit as that was not always effective. He said: “There is the likelihood the number of motorists speeding there at night would be likely to carry on speeding.”

Earlier in the meeting, a parent of Hurst Park Primary School in West Molesey pleaded with the committee to do more to slow down traffic outside the school and in nearby Walton Road as children walked to school.

Lights installed after a push by another parent Louise Duffy earlier this year are do to be switched on this week.
