Part of Esher Common is closed after a member of the public discovered two World War Two mortars in the park.

Surrey Police were called to the common at around 9:00 am, on Sunday, September 16, after someone discovered two suspicions devices that looked like unexploded shells.

Officers and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended and found the shells were unexploded mortars. They were transported to a secure site where controlled explosions were carried out.

The site remains closed, as police believe there could be a third mortar in Esher common. Officers are searching the site near the A3 with a specialist dog. The search will continue today (September 17). The A3 side of the common and Copsem Lane car park is also closed.

The rest of the common is open. Members of the public who may attend Esher Common are asked to remain vigilant and if they see a suspicious device , they should withdraw to a safe distance, contact police immediately and under no circumstances try to move or transport it.
