Calum Maynard, from West Molesey, was at work when he found out he’d been selected to compete in the commonwealth fencing championships in Australia.
Mr Maynard, who works in a construction consultancy firm in Kingston, said his colleagues were “very impressed” that he had been selected.
The 25-year-old, who has been involved in competitive fencing for around a decade, will be flying to Canberra in Australia in November to compete in the games.
Mr Maynard said he had an inkling he would be selected but was “overjoyed” to have been invited to compete.
He said: “I am training as hard as I can, about seven or eight hours a week.”
The Commonwealth Senior and Veteran Fencing Championships, held every four years, will run from November 23 to November 28 2018.
