A man who punched an innocent person in the face before damaging an Epsom bar with a piece of wood has walked away with a fine and community service.

Adepoju Adegoke, 38, of St John’s Road, Leatherhead had been asked to leave Stir in East Street after staying beyond closing time due to a dispute over his coat in the early hours of February 10.

He had initially tried to get back in before door staff escorted him further up the road and locked the door.

When he came back, a man came over and tried to talk to him.

Adegoke punched the man in the face, knocking him to the floor.

Adegoke walked off but then returned shortly afterwards and began damaging the club door with a large piece of wood. He eventually gave up and left in the direction of the High Street.

At a hearing in Staine's Magistrate's Court on July 4, Adegoke pleaded guilty to the assault.

He was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, ordered to pay £100 compensation and required to carry out 140 hours unpaid work.

In addition, he was sentenced to four weeks’ imprisonment suspended for 18 months, fined £200, ordered to pay £420 compensation and required to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work for the criminal damage caused at the time of the incident.
