Gorgeous Brewery is an independent, family run artisan brewery with its own beer garden based at The Bull Pub, a listed building in Highgate.

It produces eight beers and patrons are welcomed in to take a look at the brews in process, as the brewery is build alongside the new beer garden.

Times Series:

All of Gorgeous Brewery’s beers have a distinct label design and tasting notes and are bottled and labelled by hand, with light bodied pale ales, a dark and rich vanilla malt stout and seasonal IPAs.

Seven of the beers including, Glowfly, Greaseball and Goofyhoof are vegan, unfined and unfiltered, and therefore retain a natural haze, as well as offering a more intense flavour.

I tried them all, naturally, and my favourite was the Glowfly with its malty body and firm bitterness with a touch of toffee sweetness and fruit.

Times Series:

It all started with a small two-barrel brewing kit, which founder Rob Laub inherited from The Bull pub’s previous owners, he now works alongside brewers Reuben Moore, Joe Conlan and his sister Sam Laub who also designs the labels.

Refurbished at the beginning of 2018, the pub is dog-friendly and offers a warm and welcoming space, with cosy armchairs, a large bar and a real hearth, which is lit during the colder winter months.

I visited the pub and brewery last Wednesday, when people descend for their weekly offer of half kilo bucket of wings, with a selection of speciality sauces, for just £5.

They also have a vegan option with cauliflower, which I chose as a starter along with the grilled king prawns and Chipotle butter (£6.50) – which was the best butter and most wondrous flavour I have ever come across – and the lobster and salmon Scotch egg with dill mayo (£8.50). Both dishes are innovative, moreish and spectacularly flavoured.

Times Series:

For mains my partner chose the miso glazed stone bass, pak choi, papaya and green chilli salsa with lime (£19), which I tried and loved. It was perfectly cooked with glorious flavours. I great choice.

I wasn’t the least bit envious because I have no doubt that my choice of herb crusted lamb sirloin, garlic mash potato and honey glazed carrot (£22) was the winning dish. The meat was decadent, perfectly cooked and sumptuous to taste.

After tasting all the beers and eating all the food, I didn’t think I could face a dessert.

My other half and owner Rob Laub paired up to encourage me, but I couldn’t agree to anything more than a scoop of sorbet.

However when the smell of the sticky toffee pudding with salt caramel ice cream (£7) hit my nostrils as it was laid across the table in front of my partner I, to his dismay, tucked into it nonetheless.

I cannot fault The Bull and Gorgeous Brewery. Whether it is the food, the affable atmosphere and service, the setting, the beer or their entrepreneurial backstory, I loved every minute of my experience there.

Renowned for its Sunday Roasts, including Irish beef and Norfolk chicken, the venue also serves a decadent Brunch menu.
